\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The summer of ’72, I was a kid in\u00a0Sioux City<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, and the new song\u00a0“Smoke On The Water”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was constantly playing from my little Panasonic\u00a0“Red Ball”<\/em>\u00a0AM Radio, My\u00a0Uncle John’s<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Band\u00a0“Freedom Of Wild Water II”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0played this song at the Riverside Jr High School Dance, it was one of the 1st songs I ever learned on guitar, that &\u00a0“Iron Man”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0I didn’t really understand what the words meant, I thought the\u00a0“Fire in the sky”<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0referred to a sunset. So this edition I will cover the most successful & longest running lineup of\u00a0‘Deep Purple’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0referred to as\u00a0“Mk II”<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

>Purple Shades: 1968<<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The band was formed in\u00a0May 1968<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, in\u00a0Hertford, UK,<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the name came from Ritchie Blackmore’s Grandmother’s favorite song\u00a0“Deep Purple”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0Peter DeRose from 1933<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. The founder & leader\u00a0(until 1970)<\/em>\u00a0Keyboardist\u00a0Jon\u00a0Lord<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(John Douglas Lord; born in Leicester on 9 Jun 1971 – 16 Jul 2012)<\/u><\/em>\u00a0& Guitarist\u00a0Ritchie\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>Blackmore<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Richard Hugh Blackmore; born in Somerset on 14 April 1945)<\/u><\/em>\u00a0& Drummer\u00a0Ian Paice<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Ian Anderson Paice; born in Nottingham on 28 Jun 1948)<\/u><\/em>\u00a0with\u00a0Bassist Nick Simper & Vocalist Rod Evans.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Summer of 1969<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, after 3 albums, Blackmore, Lord & Paice decided to take the band in a newer\u00a0“Hard Rock”<\/em>\u00a0direction. They recruited 2 members of the\u00a0Harrow-London<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0based Band\u00a0‘Episode Six’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0one being Vocalist\u00a0Ian Gillian<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(born in\u00a0London on 19 Aug 1945)<\/u><\/em>\u00a0& the other Bassist & Founder of ‘Episode Six’\u00a0Roger\u00a0Glover<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Roger David Glover; born in\u00a0 Wales on 30 Nov 1945),\u00a0<\/u>who in my opinion in \u201972, was about the coolest looking guy on the planet earth.<\/em>\u00a0‘Episode Six’ released 9 Singles from 1966-68 on\u00a0PYE & MGM records.<\/em><\/p>\n


\n<\/em>Hence\u00a0Deep Purple “MkII”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was born. This lineup lasted from\u00a0June 1969 to the July 1973<\/em><\/strong>, releasing;\u00a04 studio albums 2 live albums & 12 singles.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0With this lineup most songs were written with Music by:\u00a0 Blackmore\u00a0&\u00a0Glover\u00a0& Lyrics by Gillian, although all 5 members were credited.<\/p>\n

\n

> Symphony No. 69 <<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The 1st release for the band was the\u00a0“Live”<\/em>\u00a0album\u00a0‘Concerto For Group And Orchestra’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0released in\u00a0Dec 1969<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Lord wrote an orchestral piece for the band, it was recorded live & released, the 1st time a rock band played live with an orchestra. The 1st single released by the band was the Non-LP\u00a0“Hallelujah (I.A.T.P.) b\/w April Part 1”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0probably because Gillian had been singing the part of\u00a0“Jesus”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0“Rock Opera Concept Album”<\/em>\u00a0‘Jesus Christ Superstar’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0released in late ’69.<\/p>\n

> Into The Fire: 1970 – 1971 <\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The 1st real release for the band is actually the 2nd album for this lineup, the LP\u00a0‘In Rock’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is released in\u00a0June 1970<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, strangely with the Non-LP single\u00a0“Black Night\u00a0 b\/w Speed King”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which hit\u00a0#66<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the\u00a0Billboard Charts in Jun ’70<\/em><\/strong>. There was one out-take left off of the album;\u201dCry Free\u201d.\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>The stand out tracks for me are;\u00a0“Flight Of The Rat” “Speed King” & “Child In Time”.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

The next release although Not A\u00a0‘Deep Purple’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0album is worth noting, as it put Vocalist\u00a0Gillian<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the limelight, & brought a whole new notoriety to the band that he was currently in. The musical album\u00a0‘Jesus Christ Superstar’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was recorded in\u00a0Oct 1969<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, but released in the\u00a0USA in May 1971<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0& became a\u00a0#1<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0album on\u00a0the Billboard charts.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The next release for ‘Purple’ is\u00a0‘Fireball’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0released in\u00a0July 1971<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0& rises to\u00a0#32<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the Billboard Charts, the single released for this album is\u00a0“Fireball b\/w Demon’s Eye & or Anyone’s Daughter”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0released in\u00a0Oct 1971<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. My favorite tracks form this release;\u00a0“Fools” “No One Came” & “No No No”\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

> Fire In The Sky: 1972 <<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0March 1972<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the release their milestone\u00a0‘Machine Head’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which rises to\u00a0#7<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the Billboard Charts, the single released for this album is\u00a0“Never Before b\/w When A Blind Man Cries”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Unbelievably the Anthem\u00a0“Smoke On The Water”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is Not released as a single, but does get a massive amount of airplay. My favorite tracks from this LP:\u00a0“Maybe I’m Leo” “Never Before” & “Highway Star”<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0*De Dee is very proud of the fact she is one of the only women she knows of, who knows all of the words to \u201cHighway Star\u201d she was told this by a band she was watching one night in St. Cloud.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

As Band is at the height of their popularity the album\u00a0‘Purple Passages’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is released in\u00a0Nov 1972<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, a double LP\u00a0“Best Of”<\/em>\u00a0with 12 tracks off of the 1st three\u00a0Deep Purple “Mk I”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0albums released in\u00a01968-69<\/em><\/strong>. As the band embarks on the tour for their most successful album, they do make a stop here in town: Here is the date & setlist;<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Still at the zenith of their popularity they release their 2nd\u00a0“Live”<\/em>\u00a0album\u00a0‘Made In Japan’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(recorded in Aug ’72)<\/em>\u00a0released in\u00a0April 1973<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0& rises to\u00a0#6<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the Billboard Charts, the single released for this album is from the previous LP\u00a0“Smoke On The Water (Studio) b\/w Smoke On The Water (Live)”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is released in\u00a0May 1973<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0& rises to\u00a0#4<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the Billboard Charts. The final album from this lineup is\u00a0‘Who Do We Think We Are’\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>released in\u00a0Jan 1973<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0& hits\u00a0#15<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the Billboard Charts the single released is\u00a0“Woman From Tokyo b\/w Black Night (live)”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which makes it to\u00a0#60<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the charts in\u00a0Oct 1973<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. There is an out-take from this session\u00a0“Painted Horse”.<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0This is probably my favorite album from this lineup with the songs;\u00a0“Smooth Dancer”\u00a0 “Super Trooper” “Rat Bat Blue” & “Mary Long”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. It is the summer of ’73 & Gillian is frustrated with Blackmore & decides to leave, not long after Glover follows, thus ending the “Mk II’ lineup until April 1984 for\u00a0‘Perfect Strangers’<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
