Article #88 for WDGY Radio (#13jg)<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0When I was a kid growing up in\u00a0<strong><em><u>Sioux City<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in 4th Grade I was attending Old East Jr. then a alternative school known as<em><u>&#8220;ARDVARK&#8221;<\/u><\/em>\u00a0we used to go for swimming lessons across the street at\u00a0<strong><em><u>Morningside Collage<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, I remember\u00a0seeing a poster on the wall\u00a0 for an upcoming concert\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;James Gang&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0<strong><em><u>12 Dec 1973<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, now at that time the 2 most popular songs in our circles was\u00a0<em>&#8220;Smoke On The Water&#8221; &amp; &#8220;Jesus Christ Superstar&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0so I wasn&#8217;t really sure who the\u00a0<em>&#8216;James Gang&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0were, little did I know my Uncle Jeff&#8217;s friend Tommy Bolin was now in the &#8216;James Gang&#8217;, however it does seem like any house I went to back then, they owned a copy of\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;James Gang: Bang&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in their record collection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em><u>&gt; Seems To Me: 1965 &#8211; 1972 &lt;<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<strong><em><u>\u2018James Gang\u2019<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0began with founder\u00a0<strong><em><u>James &#8220;Jim&#8221; Fox<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0(24 August 1947: Cleveland, Ohio)<\/em>\u00a0on Drums &amp; Organ who\u00a0started out as\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;The Starfires&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in High School with\u00a0<strong><em><u>Tom Kriss<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on Bass, they changed the name to\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;James Gang&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in 1966,\u00a0this is where the name came from\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;James Fox&#8217;s Gang&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong><em><u>Greg Grandillo<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on Lead Guitar.\u00a0In\u00a0<em>Jan 1968\u00a0<strong><u>Joe Walsh<\/u><\/strong>(Joseph\u00a0Fidler: 20 Nov 1947: Wichita, Kansas)<\/em>\u00a0left the band\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;The Measles&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to be the Lead Guitarist &amp; Lead Vocalist of the<strong><em><u>&#8216;James Gang&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<strong><em>1968 to 1971; for 3 albums<\/em><\/strong>, &amp; then in\u00a0Nov 1969, one\u00a0<strong><em><u>Dale Peters:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0(17 Sep 1948)<\/em>\u00a0replaces Kriss on Bass, for 9 albums.\u00a0Walsh was eventually replaced by Vocalist\u00a0<strong><em><u>Roy Kenner:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0(14 Jan 1948 Toronto, Canada)<\/em>\u00a0from\u00a0<em>1972 &#8211; 1974; for 4 albums<\/em>\u00a0&amp; Guitarist\u00a0<strong><em><u>Domenic Troiano<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0(17 Jan 1946 \u2013 25 May 2005)<\/em>\u00a0for 2 albums, both were from the Canadian\u00a0band\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Bush&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0who released\u00a01 album in 1970.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In &#8217;73 Troiano left the band, Joe Walsh was still signed to\u00a0<strong><em><u>ABC-Dunhill Records<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0as was\u00a0<em>(at one time: 1969 -70),<\/em>\u00a0the Colorado band\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Zephry&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong><em><u>Tommy Bolin (1 Aug 1951: Sioux City, Iowa &#8211; 4 Dec 1976; Miami)<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, Walsh, in &#8217;72 was with the band\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Barnstorm&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&amp; Bolin was in the band\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Energy&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Jim Fox called Walsh to ask for a recommendation for a new guitarist, Walsh recommended this new up and coming kid\u00a0<em>(Bolin had a nameplate &#8220;The Kid&#8221; on his Amp Head)<\/em>\u00a0from Boulder, this Tommy Bolin. Bolin had left &#8216;Zephyr&#8217; with his Drummer &amp; friend\u00a0<strong><em><u>Bobby Berge<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in May &#8217;71, to form his\u00a0<em>&#8220;dream&#8221;<\/em>band\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Energy&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, this band had several musical styles, as well as a revolving door of members, and as fantastic as the main stay lineup\u00a0<strong><em>(Bolin, Berge, Jeff Cook, Stanley Sheldon &amp; Tom Stephenson)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was, they just couldn&#8217;t seem to land a record deal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em><u>&#8216;Energy&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0seeming going nowhere, broke up and Bolin recorded the guitar tracks in May \u201873 for 4 songs for\u00a0<strong><em><u>Billy Cobham&#8217;s<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>(16 May 1944: Panama)<\/em>\u00a01st solo record\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Spectrum&#8217;\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>on Atlantic Records, released\u00a0in\u00a0<strong><em><u>Oct 1973<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Bolin gets a call from Fox to come down and audition, the band likes what they hear from Bolin, it doesn&#8217;t hurt that Bolin brings with him, a plethora\u00a0of original songs\u00a0<em>(usually co-written with Jeff Cook or John Tesar).<\/em>\u00a0Bolin joins the\u00a0<em>&#8216;James Gang&#8217; from\u00a0August 1973 to August 1974, for 2 Albums, 2 Singles and over 70 Concerts &amp; several TV appearances.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em><u>&gt; Ride The Wind: 1973 &lt;<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0At this time Bolin is using a\u00a0<em>(the finish a\u00a0shoe polish brown)<\/em>\u00a0<strong><em><u>Tele-Strat;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the neck of a Telecaster &amp; the body of a Stratocaster\u00a0<em>(rumored to now be owned by the guitarist from &#8216;Generation X&#8217; in the UK)<\/em>\u00a0<strong><em><u>1972 Hi Watt Amp model DR-103<\/u><\/em><\/strong>made in England, a\u00a0<strong><em><u>Sam Ash Fuzz Face pedal<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><em><u>Sound City 4 x 12 speaker cabinets<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and his legendary\u00a0<strong><em><u>Maestro Echoplex; model\u00a0EP-3<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, later Bolin purchases a brand new\u00a0<strong><em><u>1974 black Fender Stratocaster<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<em>(which he used until the night of his death, now located somewhere on the East Coast)<\/em>\u00a0his girlfriend,\u00a0<strong><em><u>Karen Ulibarri<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<em>(she went on to be the head costumer for KISS in the 80s &amp; 90s, I met her through Eric Singer)\u00a0<\/em>since 1968 made his stage clothes for him,\u00a0<em>a Silver Lame&#8217; Suit &amp; a Red Velvet Suit,<\/em>\u00a0among others. When Bolin joins &#8216;James Gang&#8217; they sign a new record deal with\u00a0<strong><em><u>ATCO-Atlantic Records<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Bolin has many unused songs from his\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Energy&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a01971-73 or\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;American Standard&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a01968 days:\u00a0<strong><em>&#8220;Got No Time For Trouble&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;Oh Carol (from another time)&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;Standing In The Rain (come back to me)&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;Jump Back (somebody help me)&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;Alexis (come on cool it)\u201d &#8220;Bring Our Love Home&#8221; &#8220;Red Skies&#8221; &#8220;Must Be Love (bring it on up)&#8221; &amp; &#8220;Mystery&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(I have copies of these recordings from Bolin&#8217;s personal reel to reel collection)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\nThe band begin recording their 6th album in\u00a0<strong><em><u>Mar &#8217;73<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, Bolin writes\u00a0or\u00a0co-writes 8 of the 9 songs released on the album &amp; sings lead on &#8220;Alexis&#8221; his 1st released vocal ever.\u00a0The LP\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Bang&#8217;\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>(#SD-7037)<\/em>\u00a0is released on\u00a0<strong><em><u>1 Sep 1973<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and climbs to\u00a0<strong><em><u>#122<\/u><\/em><\/strong>on the Billboard Charts, 2 singles are released from this album;\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Must Be Love b\/w \u00a0Got No Time For Troubles&#8221; (#6953)<\/u><\/em><\/strong>which charts at\u00a0<strong><em><u>#54<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong><em><u>Apr &#8217;74<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0followed by\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Standing In The Rain b\/w From Another Time&#8221; (#6966)\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many do not realize the cover photo was taken when Troiano was still in the band as Tommy&#8217;s head imposed\u00a0over Dominick Troiano&#8217;s body in photo on the cover. The Bolin museum\u00a0in Sioux City, there is a 3 x 3 foot foam core poster of the album cover signed by all 4 members in blue ballpoint pen.<\/p>\n<p><em>Johnnie Bolin in 2005: \u201cYou know Tommy was always asked to join these other bands and when he did he really did revive them. He would come in and he would bring all these songs. Just look at the albums he played on almost all the songs he co-wrote or brought to the band. Also you wouldn\u2019t know this, but the album cover photo of \u2018BANG\u2019 Tommy\u2019s head was super imposed over the old guitarist\u2019s body (Domenic Troiano). You see Tommy never wore rings, (even though he was given the ring Hendrix was wearing when Hendrix died,\u00a0 although Tommy was buried with that same ring) and in the cover photo it shows him wearing rings, that\u2019s because it\u2019s not Tommy\u2019s hand!\u00a0 Because the band didn\u2019t want to spring for another photo shoot. I was there in the studio the day Tommy recorded his first vocal for release, for the vocal take of \u2018ALEXIS\u2019 Tommy had all the lights turned down real low so he could just see the lyrics sheet. He did the vocal and when he was done he turned to me and said \u2018How did I do, I mean what did you think?\u2019 I Replied \u2018Yeah, man you did fine, it sounded good\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bolin&#8217;s 1st concert with the band was on\u00a0<strong><em><u>Wed\u00a026\u00a0Sept 1973 in Big Rapids, Michigan<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. A\u00a0<em>&#8220;Studio Soundboard&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0recording\u00a0of the band does exist from Sep-73 in Ohio. James Gang performs about\u00a0<em>28 concerts<\/em>\u00a0in &#8217;73. Bolin was at least friends\u00a0with\u00a0<strong><em><u>Tim Goodman<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and perhaps played on Goodman&#8217;s recordings in Nov-73 on a\u00a0Studio Board recording made in\u00a0Boulder, Colorado, of the songs\u00a0<em>\u201c<\/em><em>Seagulls Believe \/ To Be Free\u201d\u00a0&amp; \u201cMy Baby She\u2019s Lost\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is the Setlist\u00a0<em>(as best as I can tell)<\/em>\u00a0to the concert I mentioned previously;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<strong><em><u>12 December 1973 Wed. 8pm B-Sharp Productions<br \/>\nMorningside Collage Eppley Auditorim $4.oo with opener Danny Matousek (of the Vel Aires)<\/u><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Funk #49<br \/>\nRide The Wind<br \/>\nDevil Is Singing Our Song<br \/>\nMust Be Love<br \/>\nStratus: Medley<br \/>\na.Tommy\u2019s Guitar Solo<br \/>\nb. Echoplex Solo<br \/>\nStanding In The Rain<br \/>\nWalk Away\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been told that Roy Kenner came out on stage wearing a Morningside Collage Band Uniform, and a cast on his leg as he broke his leg jumping off of some guitar amplifiers while filming a TV appearance. The 1st major\u00a0TV Appearance is on the\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Midnight Special&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong><em><u>18 Dec 1973 Tues.<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the band performs 3 songs\u00a0<em>(the standard back then)<\/em>\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Must Be Love&#8221; &#8220;Standing In The Rain&#8221; &#8220;Devil Is Singing Our Song&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the is a very famous photo of Tommy from this TV show appearance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em><u>28 December 1973 Des Moines, Iowa @ Veterans Memorial Auditorium<\/u><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><u><br \/>\nHeadliner: Johnny Winter (as the opener)<\/u><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Ace Acela: In 2007<br \/>\n\u201cMy friend &amp; I left school after lunch break to go get tickets to the concert that night. We got there early enough that we got back stage, I just walked in like I owned the place. We were wondering around and there were the band\u2019s instruments. I noticed that stuck on Tommy\u2019s guitar case that there was a \u2018BARNSTORM\u2019 sticker. I thought that\u2019s funny Joe Walsh left JAMES GANG For BARNSTORM and the new guitarist has A BARNSTORM<\/em>\u00a0sticker on his case.\u201d In case you readers missed this, it was because Walsh &amp; Bolin were friends, the keyboardist &amp; vocalist for Barnstorm: Tom Stephenson was from Bolin&#8217;s previous band &#8216;Energy&#8217;. There is a recording of Walsh &amp; Bolin jamming at a recording studio in Boulder, CO. for about 30min.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em><u>&gt;Wildfire: 1974 &lt;<\/u><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThere is \u00a0a reel to reel tape from Bolin&#8217;s personal collection marked \u00a0<strong><em><u>\u201cJames Gang Ideas\u201d<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which contains demo recordings of\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Summer Breezes&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Instrumental \u00a0(Journey)&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which later becomes\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Marching Powder&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Spanish Lover&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. The 2nd album with Bolin,\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Miami&#8217;\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>is released in\u00a0<strong><em><u>July 1974<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and makes it to\u00a0<strong><em><u>#97<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on charts, the 45 Single released from this LP is\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Crusin Down The Highway b\/w Miami Two Step&#8221;.<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Bolin releases his 2nd Lead Vocal with\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Spanish Lover&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the song<strong><em><u>&#8220;Red Skies&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a leftover from Bolin&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Energy&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0days, a couple years earlier. I always wondered how\u00a0prophetic this album is; titled\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Miami&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and is all Black and Tommy would die in Miami only 2 years and 5 months later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\nThe band make their 2nd national TV appearance on\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Don Kirshner&#8217;s Rock Concert&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong><em><u>23 Feb 1974 Sat.<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0performing a whopping 5 songs including:\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Walk Away&#8221; &#8220;Devil Is Singing Our Song&#8221; &#8220;Ride The Wind&#8221; &#8220;Funk #49&#8221; &#8220;Standing In The Rain<\/u><\/em><u>&#8220;<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0(these can be found on YOUTUBE). This was recorded earlier, most likely in Dec &#8217;73, and it&#8217;s believed\u00a0this is where Roy Kenner broke his leg. The bands 3rd TV appearance\u00a0comes in the form of an interview on the\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Old Gray Whistle Test&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong><em><u>21 May 1974 Tues<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with Jim Fox &amp; Tommy Bolin.<\/p>\n<p><em>Andrew Wissing: \u201cThere is an audio tape of \u2018MIAMI\u2019 with no vocals from Tommy\u2019s personal\u00a0collection. (from interviews with JIM FOX &amp; DALE PETERS) the instrumental recorded versions of the \u2018MIAMI\u2019 songs without Roy Kenner\u2019s vocals exist because, apparently Roy Kenner was tied up with court dates in Los Angeles and could not add his vocal parts until later on, After the band had recorded all the instrumental parts\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nA band originally from Cleveland, OH.\u00a0\u00a0being\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Rainbow Canyon&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0releases\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Rollin \u00a0In The Rockies&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>1974 on Capitol records #ST-11272<\/em>\u00a0 Tommy Bolin provides lead guitar on the 45 single\u00a0<em>(A side)<\/em>\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8220;Invisible Song b\/w Hanover Square&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>#SP-20132 Produced by: Jim Fox, band member\u00a0Greg Grandillo was the 1st lead guitarist for the &#8216;James Gang&#8217; in 1966.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em><u>29 June 1974 Sat Traverse City, Michigan @ Fair Grounds Bldg.<br \/>\nJ.D.Productions \u00a0 7:00pm &amp; 10:00pm $5.oo w\/ Opener; \u2018TALISMAN\u2019<\/u><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Michael Mordon: Bass Player For \u2018TALISMAN\u2019 In 2007 \u201cYou see my wife from then &amp; the girlfriend of our drummer went with the promoter to pick up the\u00a0<\/em><em>\u2018JAMES<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>GANG\u2019<\/em><em>\u00a0from the airport.\u00a0<\/em><em>T<\/em><em>he band was expecting to be picked up in a limousine not a\u00a0<\/em><em>W<\/em><em>innebago<\/em><em>,<\/em><em>\u00a0which they had to use as a dressing room.\u00a0<\/em><em>I<\/em><em>t seems they weren<\/em><em>\u2019<\/em><em>t real impressed or real<\/em><em>\u00a0happy about that, or anything else for that matter.<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>I<\/em><em>\u00a0don<\/em><em>\u2019<\/em><em>t think they weren<\/em><em>&#8216;<\/em><em>t getting along real well.\u00a0<\/em><em>T<\/em><em>hey didn<\/em><em>\u2019<\/em><em>t have much to say to anybody<\/em><em>,<\/em><em>\u00a0much less each other<\/em><em>;<\/em><em>\u00a0in addition too\u00a0<\/em><em>T<\/em><em>ommy was a little incoherent as he had been up for three days with no<\/em><em>sleep.<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On\u00a0<strong><em><u>Sat 21 August 1974 in Odessa, TX.<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Tommy performs his last show with the &#8216;James Gang&#8217;
