So it’s late\u00a01985<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0into early ’86 I am transitioning from selling stereos & cameras to sellingVinyl Records<\/u><\/em>\u00a0at\u00a0RecordShop\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>in Valley West Mall\u00a0( I was there until Spring ’91)<\/em>\u00a0I had not heard of the\u00a0‘Bangles’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0until I went to my Manager’s Apt. she had MTV I saw the\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWalk Like An Egyptian’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u201dvideo … I fell in LOVE. Their album\u00a0‘Different Light’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was out at this time, so I played it at work, Fantastic. I loved the title track,\u00a0“Following”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&\u00a0“Let It Go”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0I was now a fan … here we go the\u00a0Bangles;<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

> How’s The Air Up There: 1980 -1982 <<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The band started out as\u00a0‘The Bangs’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a01980<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0Susanna Lee Hoffs<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(17 Jan 1959:L.A.CA<\/a>.)<\/em>\u00a0on\u00a0Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitar<\/em>\u00a0&\u00a0“Vicki” Victoria\u00a0Anne Theresa Peterson -Cowsill<\/u><\/em><\/strong>(11 Jan 1958: L.A. CA.)<\/em>\u00a0on\u00a0Lead Guitar & Vocals<\/em>\u00a0with her younger sister\u00a0“Debbi”\u00a0 Deborah Mary Peterson:<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(22 Aug 1961: L.A. CA.)<\/em>\u00a0on\u00a0Drums & Vocals,<\/em>\u00a0the trio found each other in a ad in the local music publication, they rehearsed at Hoffs loft in CA.\u00a0(Hoffs told me in 2007)<\/em>\u00a0The band’s 1st record was the 45 Single\u00a0\u00a0“Getting Out Of Hand b\/w Call On Me”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0released in\u00a01981<\/u><\/em><\/strong>on\u00a0DownKiddie Records<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. In\u00a01982<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the band is signed to\u00a0‘Faulty Products Records’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and releases the\u00a0“Self Titled EP”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0, the band write 4 of the 5 songs on this EP, which is later re-released\u00a01983<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0I.R.S. Records<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. This is the only release with the original Bassist\u00a0Annette Celia Genevieve Zilinskas<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(6 Nov 1962: Van Nuys, CA.)\u00a0<\/em>who would return to the band in2018<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. The single for this EP was\u00a0“Real World (remix)”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0this version was released on the 6 song CD re-release, there is also a music video for this song. The song\u00a0I chose to play on my\u00a0WDGY Radio show<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0“I’m In Line”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0sung by Debbi, although I also really like\u00a0“Want You”<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from this release.<\/p>\n

> All About You: 1984 -85 <<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 In the Summer of ’83,\u00a0Zilinskas<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0departs & one\u00a0Michael Steele<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Susan Nancy Thomas: 2 Jun 1955; Pasadena, CA)<\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0Original\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>Bassist with\u00a0‘The Runaways’\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>in\u00a01975<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0Joan Jett & Sandy West,<\/em>\u00a0(Steele left in ’75 before ‘The Runaways’ 1st release),<\/em>\u00a0takes over the Bass duties. The band’s 2nd release\u00a0\u2019All Over The Place’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Columbia Records<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is released in\u00a0May 1984,<\/u><\/em><\/strong>the band writes 9 of the 11 songs, and releases the singles\u00a0“Hero Takes A Fall b\/w Where Were You When I Needed You (non-lp)”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 and then\u00a0“Going Down To Liverpool b\/w the instrumental (non-lp)”.<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0The band does 1 song in the film\u00a0“The Goonies”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0released in\u00a0Jun 1985<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with the\u00a0single “I Got Nothing b\/w Dave Grusin”,<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the band also appears in Cyndi Lauper’s video from this film as well. The song I chose for my\u00a0WDGY show<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0“Going Down To Liverpool”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0sung by Debbi, I also really like\u00a0\u201cAll About You\u201d<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from this album.<\/p>\n

> September Gurls: 1986 -87 <<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a01986<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is the year of the\u00a0‘Bangles’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0as they release their 3rd album\u00a0‘Different Light’\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong>the band writes 7 of the 12 songs, and releases a whopping 4 singles starting with\u00a0“Manic Monday b\/w In A Different Light”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(written by Prince as he was seeing Hoffs at\u00a0 the time)<\/em>\u00a0a\u00a0\u00a0#2 hit<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the Billboard Charts in\u00a0Apr 1986<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. The 2nd single\u00a0“If She Knew What She Wants b\/w Angels Don’t Fall In Love”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0charts at\u00a0#29<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Jul 1986<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and finally their signature song\u00a0“Walk Like An Egyptian b\/w Not Like You”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0their 1st\u00a0#1<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the charts in\u00a0Dec 1986<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0& then the 4th single“Walking Down Your Street b\/w Let It Go”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0reaches\u00a0#11<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Apr 1987<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. The song I chose for the\u00a0WDGY<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Show was “Different Light” one of my all time favorite songs (dedicated to someone I used to know), I also really like\u00a0\u201cLet It Go\u201d.<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Sometime in\u00a01990<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0a cassette is released with the demo versions of many Top 40 Hits of the day, one is\u00a0“Walk Like An Egyptian”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0sung by\u00a0Marti Jones<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0recorded in\u00a01984<\/em><\/strong>. The band performs on the TV show\u00a0“Old Gray Whistle Test”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on the BBC in\u00a0Jul ’86<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Their concert\u00a0from 29 Oct 1986 in Pittsburgh, PA.\u00a0@ the Syria Mosque,<\/em>\u00a0was broadcast on\u00a0MTV’s “Sat. Nite Concert”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. In\u00a0May 1987<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Hoffs plays\u00a0“Molly Morrison”<\/em>\u00a0in the Film\u00a0“The ALLnighter”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0later this same year in\u00a0Nov ’87<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the band supply the film\u00a0“Less Than Zero”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with the song & single\u00a0\u201dHazy Of Winter b\/w Joan Jett”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which rises to\u00a0#2<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Feb 1988<\/u><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

> Crash And Burn: 1988 – 1990 <<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The band release their 4th and final album\u00a0‘Everything’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Oct. 1988<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, this time co-writing the entire album, and releasing 4 singles from this LP, the 1st being\u00a0\u00a0“Eternal Flame b\/w What I Meant To Say (non-lp)”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0their 2nd\u00a0#1<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Apr 1989<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0followed by “In Your Room b\/w Bell Jar”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which climbs to\u00a0#5<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Jan 1989<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0, then the 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0single\u00a0“Be With You b\/w Let It Go”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>which charts at\u00a0#30<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Jun 1989<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, then finally\u00a0\u00a0“I’ll Set You Free b\/w Watching The Sky”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. The song I chose for my radio show was\u00a0“Be With You”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, though I also really like\u00a0\u201cSome Dreams Come True\u201d<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Interesting note, former KISS Guitarist\u00a0Vinnie Vincent<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0plays on the song\u00a0“Make A Play For Her Now”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(he had left The Invasion, by this time)<\/em>\u00a0the ladies also provide astounding backing vocals on the\u00a0Tom Petty<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0song:\u00a0“Waiting For Tonight”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which unfortunately goes unreleased for several years. The band appears on\u00a0“SNL”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a03 Dec 1988<\/u><\/em><\/strong>performing the standard 2 songs. While I was still living in\u00a0Des Moines, IA<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. the band plays Ames in ’89, I didn’t get to go the show, but I do own photos from this show, here is the setlist;<\/p>\n

\nBy\u00a01990<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the band had split, in part due to Columbia Records pushing\u00a0Hoffs<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0to the front of the band as the lead singer which the others were somewhat resentful of.\u00a0 The\u00a0VHS & CD ‘Greatest Hits’<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is released in\u00a0May 1990<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to complete their contract.\u00a0Hoffs<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0goes solo for 2 CDs & worked with Matthew Sweet for 3 CDs and some soundtracks.\u00a0Vicki Peterson forms the ‘Continental Drifters’ for 4 CDs with Susan Cowsill.\u00a0\u00a0Debbi Peterson forms ‘Kindred Spirit’ for 2 CDs. As Hoffs & Sweet are working on the\u00a0“Austin Powers”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0film in\u00a01998<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, the band reunites for a song used in the film\u00a0“Get That Girl”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0they embark on a reunion tour in\u00a02000<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, releasing the CD\u00a0\u201dDoll Revolution”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Sep 2003<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, then later releasing the CD\u00a0“Glitter Years”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a02005<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. I saw the band live on\u00a023 Aug 2007 1st Ave in MPLS<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. I met the 3 Bangles & their new Bass Player\u00a0Abby Travis<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(10 Nov 1969 L.A. CA.)<\/em>. The last album the\u00a0Bangles<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0have released is\u00a0“Sweetheart Of The Sun”<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Sep 2011<\/u><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
