Well, he put out a<\/em> <em>record&#8221;<\/em> I thought <em>&#8220;A record? A guy from Sioux City, no, Beatles &amp; Monkees put out records, not a guy from Sioux City&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>So this time round I will be covering <strong><em><u>&#8216;ZEPHYR&#8217;<\/u> Tommy R. Bolin&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong> 1st Official release.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>&gt; Cross The River: 1967 -1968 &lt;<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 16 year old <strong><em><u>Tom Bolin <\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>(Barry Fey added the \u201cTommy\u201d later on)<\/em> drops out of <strong><em>Sioux City Central High<\/em><\/strong> to take off to <strong><em><u>Cincinnati, OH.<\/u><\/em><\/strong> to join up with <em>Guitar Legend <strong><u>Lonnie Mack<\/u><\/strong> (1941-2016)<\/em> it was here <strong><em>Bolin<\/em><\/strong> met <em>Keyboardist <strong><u>John Faris<\/u><\/strong>: (15 July 1947 -2006 Cincinnati)<\/em>, things didn&#8217;t work out in <strong><em>Ohio,<\/em><\/strong> so <strong><em>Bolin &amp; Faris<\/em><\/strong> move out to <strong><em>Boulder, CO<\/em><\/strong>. the burgeoning <em>&#8220;Hippy Scene&#8221;<\/em> of the Mid-West, the pair joined up with <strong><em><u>Jeff Cook (1948)<\/u><\/em><\/strong> to form the band <strong><em><u>&#8216;American Standard&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, by &#8217;68, Bolin &amp; Faris formed a new band <strong><em><u>&#8216;Ethereal Zephyr&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> heavy organ based blues music not unlike like <strong><em><u>&#8216;Crabby Appleton&#8217; &amp; &#8216;Steppenwolf&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Also on the local music scene was a band <strong><em><u>&#8216;Brown Sugar&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> with <em>Bassist <strong><u>David Givens<\/u><\/strong> (4 Oct 1948: Detroit)<\/em> &amp; his wife <em>Vocalist; <strong><u>Candy<\/u><\/strong> (Candace Ramey: 9 Dec 1946; Des Moines, IA. -27 Jan<\/em> <em>1984)<\/em>. The 2 bands were urged to join forces, as many thought\u00a0<strong><em><u>Bolin<\/u><\/em><\/strong> played so much like <strong><em><u>&#8220;Hendrix&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> &amp; <strong><em><u>Candy<\/u><\/em><\/strong> sang much like <strong><em><u>&#8220;Joplin&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> this would be a band to be reckoned with, they added Drummer <strong><em><u>Robby Chamberlin<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em> (R.I.P.<\/em> <em>17 Feb 2016)<\/em> to round out the band. This line-up was so good they were the opening act both days to the <strong><em><u>&#8220;Denver Pop Festival&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> featuring head-liner <strong><em>Jimi Hendrix<\/em><\/strong> on <strong><em>28-29 Jun 1968<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>&gt; Hard Chargin Woman: 1969<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Manager Barry Fey<\/u><\/em><\/strong> was able to get the band signed to <em>(ABC) <strong><u>Probe<\/u><\/strong><\/em> &amp; their 1st LP was released in <strong><em><u>Oct &#8217;69<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, commonly referred to as <strong><em>&#8220;The Bathtub&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> <em>(#CPLP-4510-S @ $4.98)<\/em>, Produced By: <strong><em>Bill Halverson<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>9 songs<\/em> <em>(2 covers)<\/em> <em>Recorded At Wally Heider Studios Los Angeles<\/em>. There was one 45 Single released <strong><em><u>&#8220;Sail On (3:35 edit) \u00a0b\/w Cross The River&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em> (#CP-475),<\/em> a <em>&#8220;Promo Clip&#8221;<\/em> was released for <strong><em><u>&#8220;Hard Chargin Woman&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> the band made at least 3 TV appearances performing <strong><em><u>&#8220;St. James Infirmary&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> on the <strong><em><u>&#8216;Barry Richards Show&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> &amp; appeared <strong><em><u>&#8216;Music Scene&#8217; <\/u><\/em><\/strong>&amp; <strong><em><u>&#8216;American Bandstand&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> in <strong><em>Jan &#8217;70<\/em><\/strong> performing <strong><em><u>&#8220;Cross The River&#8221;.<\/u><\/em><\/strong> There have been <em>3 versions<\/em> of the <em>1st CD<\/em>; on <strong><em>&#8216;Beat Goes On&#8217; &amp; &#8216;One Way&#8217;<\/em><\/strong> &amp; a <em>3-CD Deluxe Box-Set <\/em>on <strong><em>Purple Pyramid<\/em><\/strong><em>, including 2 &#8220;Live&#8221; discs; CD2 &#8220;Live Cuts: &#8217;69-73 &amp; CD3 is the 2nd reunion show on 19 Jun &#8217;73 @ Tulagi\u2019s (released in May 2014).<\/em> <strong><em><u>*David<\/u><\/em><\/strong> <strong><em><u>Givens:<\/u><\/em><\/strong> <em>&#8220;I think our 3 song demo turned out to be a better recording than the LP recording, Tommy was playing a rented &#8217;63 Gibson Mahogany SG: Les Paul Version, to get that sound everyone was going for at the time&#8221;\u00a0<strong><u>*Jeff Schwinden:<\/u><\/strong> \u201cWhen Tommy\u2019s first &#8216;ZEPHYR&#8217; record came out, It was a big deal among us guys, in that crowd, that hung with Tommy. I still have my first copy of that \u2018Bathtub\u2019 album. I went out &amp; bought it right when it was released\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>&gt; Somebody Listen: 1970 &lt;<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While touring for the 1st LP, some tensions grew in the band as the members got to know each other better <em>(according to Bolin).<\/em> <strong><em><u>Chamberlin <\/u><\/em><\/strong>began to become less motivated than the other 4. At <strong><em><u>Bolin&#8217;s <\/u><\/em><\/strong>recommendation; <strong><em><u>Bobby Berge<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>: (21 June 1948 In Sioux Falls, South Dakota)<\/em> Drummer for the <strong><em>Iowa Band<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em><u>&#8216;The Velaires&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> was brought in as a 2nd drummer, in <strong><em><u>May &#8217;70<\/u><\/em><\/strong> however in a very short time <strong><em>Berge<\/em><\/strong> was to become the <em>Only<\/em> Drummer in <strong><em><u>&#8216;ZEPHYR&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> <strong><em><u>*Berge:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em> &#8220;I always liked Tommy&#8217;s playing &amp; ZEPHYR was touring behind a record, so I thought this was a great opportunity&#8221;<\/em> It was also about this time <strong><em>(Jun &#8217;70)<\/em><\/strong> Bolin began his song writing partnership with <strong><em><u>John Tesar<\/u><\/em><\/strong>, who he had meet in <strong><em>South Dakota<\/em><\/strong> sometime in <strong><em>&#8217;67<\/em><\/strong> when <strong><em><u>Bolin<\/u><\/em><\/strong> was playing in <strong><em><u>&#8216;CHATEAU&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>. Unfortunately not a lot of Video exists on <strong><em><u>&#8216;ZEPHYR&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> there is\u00a0one for the song: <strong><em><u>&#8220;Goin Home&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> from the<strong><em><u>\u201dDay of Joy Festival&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> in <strong><em>Houston, TX<\/em><\/strong>. on <strong><em>Sun 19 Jul 1970<\/em><\/strong>. <strong><em><u>Tommy <\/u><\/em><\/strong>liked to tape record his shows onto reel-to-reel, so here is a set-list from one of Tommy\u2019s personal reels;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Tuesday 11 August 1970 Santa Monica, California @ Santa Monica<\/u> Civic Center (61:33 min Audio Recording Exists)<br \/>\nCross The River<br \/>\nGoing Back To Colorado\/Blues Jam<br \/>\nSail On<br \/>\nHard Chargin Woman\/Echoplex Solo<br \/>\nUnder My Thumb\/Gimme Shelter<br \/>\nThe Creator Has A Master Plan\/Tommy Bolin On Guitar<br \/>\nHard Chargin Woman: Reprise<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><u>*Johnnie Bolin:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><em> \u201cI was in &#8216;ZEPHYR&#8217; for 1 show (Sep 1970 Sioux Falls, S.D. @ Empire Fairgrounds), I guess &#8216;Ides Of March&#8217; was to go on last because they had the hit \u2018Vehicle\u2019 at the time. But Candy &amp; David had missed their flight. So &#8220;Ides&#8221;\u00a0went on 1st. Then &#8216;Zephyr&#8217; didn\u2019t know what to do, so Tommy asked me to go up with them, with just the 3 of them (Tommy, Berge, &amp; John Ferris) to play percussion &amp; do an &#8220;Instrumental Set&#8221;. So the 4 of us just went up &amp; jammed. Later that same year, My Mom, Pudge &amp; I took a bus up to Minneapolis (Fall &#8217;70 @ <strong><u>Magoo\u2019s New City Opera House<\/u><\/strong> w\/ Headliner \u2018SPIRIT\u2019 w\/ Opener \u201cLIGHTNING\u2019)to see them I remember it was quite a big complex. We ended up staying in a real nice hotel downtown, I\u2019m not sure how that happened?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>&gt; Showbizzy: 1971 &lt; <\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When <strong><em><u>&#8216;ZEPHYR&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> opened for <strong><em><u>LED ZEPPELIN<\/u><\/em><\/strong> <em>(for 4 shows)<\/em> <em>23-26 Jan &#8217;69<\/em> <em>(in Boston @ The Tea Party)<\/em>, <strong><em><u>Jimmy Page<\/u><\/em><\/strong> recommended <strong><em><u>Eddie Kramer<\/u><\/em><\/strong> to produce the band&#8217;s next album &amp; it was <strong><em>Kramer<\/em><\/strong> that helped the band get signed to <strong><em><u>WB Records<\/u><\/em><\/strong> as <strong><em><u>&#8216;Probe&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> had been folded by <strong><em><u>&#8216;ABC&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> in <strong><em>Apr &#8217;70<\/em><\/strong>. The band&#8217;s 2nd album\u00a0<strong><em><u>&#8216;Going back to Colorado&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> was released in <strong><em><u>Jan 1971<\/u><\/em><\/strong> on\u00a0 <strong><em>Warner Brothers Records WB-1897<\/em><\/strong>, <em>10 original songs<\/em>, with one 45 single released <strong><em><u>&#8220;Going Back To Colorado (edit) b\/w Radio Song&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>(#WB-7444),<\/em> 2 CD versions have been released of this title, the newest; a 2 CD set (in July 2016) <em><u>with 10 bonus tracks!<\/u><\/em> There is a Video to be found from <strong><em>5 Mar &#8217;71 @ Santa Monica Civic Center<\/em><\/strong><em> for <strong><u>&#8220;Cross The River&#8221;<\/u><\/strong><\/em> It was about this time the band began to split into 2 parts; the <em>Bolin-Berge duo<\/em>, <em>into experimentalism<\/em> &amp; <em>Candy, David &amp; Feris<\/em>; the <em>musical hippies<\/em>. According to <strong><em><u>David,<\/u><\/em><\/strong> <em>&#8220;Bolin wanted to be the star,<\/em> <em>&amp; he Berge wanted to do\u00a0more &#8220;Fusion Jazz&#8221; based music\u201d<\/em>, so the pair left in <strong><em>May &#8217;71<\/em><\/strong>, to form <strong><em><u>&#8216;ENERGY&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> with <strong><em><u>Jeremy Steig &amp; Kenny Passarelli<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>&gt; Moving Too Fast: 1972 -73 &lt;<\/u><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe band replaces <strong><em>Bolin<\/em><\/strong> with <strong><em><u>Jock Bartley<\/u><\/em><\/strong> &amp; their <em>3rd LP<\/em> <strong><em><u>&#8216;Sunset Ride&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> is released on <strong><em>WB in &#8217;72<\/em><\/strong>. By the <em>Summer of &#8217;73<\/em> both <strong><em><u>&#8216;ZEPHYR&#8217; &amp; &#8216;ENERGY&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> had wound down <strong><em>&amp; Candy, David, Feris &amp; Bolin<\/em><\/strong> with <strong><em>Harold \u201cMarty\u201d Fielden: (Flash Cadillac), Otis Taylor, Mick Manressa<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>&amp; Dave Brown<\/em><\/strong><em> (Bolin&#8217;s friend &amp; roadie)<\/em> were playing <strong><em><u>&#8220;Tulagi&#8217;s&#8221;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> on Monday Nights as <strong><em><u>&#8216;The Legendary 4Nikators&#8217; <\/u><\/em><\/strong>,to make some extra money. The 4 had the idea to contact <strong><em><u>Berge<\/u><\/em><\/strong> &amp; do 3 <strong><em><u>ZEPHYR Reunions<\/u><\/em><\/strong> starting on <em>2 May &#8217;73 @ Art&#8217;s Bar &amp; Grill;<\/em> there is a CD of this show released by: <strong><em><u>Tommy Bolin Archives <\/u><\/em><\/strong><em>in 1997<\/em> &amp; 2 other shows one more in <strong><em>Boulder<\/em><\/strong> &amp; 1 in <strong><em>Denver<\/em><\/strong> in <strong><em>Jun &#8217;73<\/em><\/strong>. David &amp; Candy released a 4th LP in <strong><em>&#8217;82 <u>&#8216;Heartbeat&#8217;<\/u><\/em><\/strong> on <strong><em>Red Sneakers Records<\/em><\/strong> &amp; a <em>\u2018compilation\u2019<\/em> CD released in <strong><em>2002<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There you have it, Tommy R.
